The Difficulties of Beautiful People
“Deep down the stunningly beautiful are just as lonely, frustrated, kind, and insecure as we are.”
We imagine that if we were also very beautiful, things would be easier. When we think of stunningly beautiful people we might be mistaken to think they have a perfect life. We extend the idea of their physical beauty to every other aspect of their life.
It might do us some good to explore some ways that beautiful people face difficulties around their lives. This won’t change our looks but perhaps it would make us more satisfied with our looks.
Some of the difficulties might be around:
Loneliness: The beautiful person may be interested in getting to know the plain-faced person. But, the plain-faced may avoid interacting with them because they don't see how someone so beautiful would be interested in them.
Lack of trust: we all want to be loved for who we are. But the beautiful face the burden of not knowing if they are wanted for who they are or if it is only their body that is wanted. They want to be wanted for their personality or to be appreciated for their knowledge of corporation law, but their beautiful face and body overshadows everything else; their looks just can't be ignored.
Presumption of stupidity - pop culture makes it so that we don't bother to try imagining that a beautiful person could take the time to study. Or rise to recognition because of their intellectual ability. Early on in Italy, ‘Bimbo’ was a slang that described a dumb brutish man. When it started to catch up in English America it meant dumb pretty woman. There's a striking bias that makes us falsely believe in the inherent idiocy of beautiful people.
When we’re able to take in the possibility that beautiful people also suffer difficulties in their lives, we begin to understand them. And they may become less intimidating to approach.
Deep down the stunningly beautiful are just as lonely, frustrated, kind, and insecure as we are. They may, perhaps, even be just worse off. So, maybe there isn't much to envy about them.
